Interactive Author Visits

“Rev up” your students’ interest in reading and writing with an author visit from Nancy Roe Pimm.

Program 1~  “Race to Your Dreams”

I begin with a brief bio of my journey on becoming an author.  I wrote my first book at age ten and still have it to share with the students.  I discuss the importance in believing in your dreams even when surrounded by non-believers! I share my magazine articles about sharks, elephants, and gorillas.  While discussing the Indy 500 book, I bring along "pit trash" from the Rahal/Letterman Indy 500 winning race team. Included in my props are an actual racing uniform and helmet, a seat from an Indy car, wings from an Indy car, racing flags, and other assorted Indy car parts.

Projector needed.  Approx. 40 minutes

Program 2~ “The Heart of a Dream”

I begin with a brief bio of my journey to become an author. Once again I stress the importance of believing in dreams of any size! I present a slide show of gorillas while I share the heart-warming true-life stories from "The Heart of the Beast."  As we discuss the book, we will discuss the many ways in which gorillas are “hauntingly human!” Projector needed. Approx. 40 minutes

Program 3~The Inside Track to Creative Writing- Through an interactive game, I will teach the students the various steps needed to create a piece of fiction.  After playing the game the students will have form into groups of 4-6 to create their very own stories. Recommended for grades 3 and up. Approx. 40-45 minutes

Program 4~ The Inside Track to Non-Fiction Writing- Through an interactive game I will teach the students the process of writing non-fiction.  This process can be used throughout their school career for term papers and reports.  I will also share a power point presentation on writing non-fiction. Recommended for grades 4 & up.

Approx  40 minutes.

Program 5~Author Walk-About

I will drop in on up to six classrooms for about 15 minutes at a time.   Each teacher can choose between a question and answer session about writing and the writer’s life or a game of “The Inside Track to Creating a Story.” After I play the game with the students I will leave for the next class at which time the teacher can have them form groups to test the writing theory!

  1. Pimm offers three presentations a day. Large groups are fine. She brings along "pit trash" from the Rahal/ Letterman Indy 500 winning race team. Included in her props are an actual racing uniform and helmet, a seat from an Indy car, wings from an Indy car, racing flags, and other assorted Indy car parts. There is also a slide show about racing and writing. A projector which plugs into a lap top is needed. Pimm will share many racing stories from her years working on an Indy 500 pit crew. She also talks to the group about writing tips and a writer's life. She shares with the younger age groups her magazine articles about elephants, gorillas, and sharks. She wraps up the presentation by talking to the group about believing in and following your dreams. Ms. Pimm wrote her first book as a ten-year old and has it to share with the audience. Her husband followed his dreams from farmer to racing in the Indy 500, although he was told many times his dream was impossible. She encourages the kids to achieve their dreams through reading, writing, and perseverance

COST

Ms. Pimm's honorarium is $800 a day plus expenses. Payment is due the day of the presentation. She submits her expense receipts to the hosting organization upon her return home and expects reimbursement within a month.
